Twitch Piñata (Boss Battle)

Twitch Piñata (Boss Battle)

Twitch is testing a new Piñata feature that unlocks a temporary 24-hour emote if viewers crack it open. To break the Piñata, viewers have five minutes to Subscribe, Gift Subs, or give Bits to take a swing. Functionally, this is a Hype Train, but instead of an ever-increasing level, it has no obvious target. Presumably, channel history would influence when the Piñata breaks. Creators can turn off Piñatas.

If viewers break the Piñata, the default emote they unlock is feelinggoated. Everyone in chat at the time will get the emote to use across Twitch for the next 24 hours. Creators can upload their own emote instead.

If viewers fail to break the Piñata, they get a gloatgoat to use across Twitch for the next 24 hours.

Context:

Twitch's most successful monetization product has been Hype Trains. They have been a major driver of viewer spending. However, the number of Hype Train types has generally become a bit much: Regular, Community, Treasure, Golden Kappa, Mythic, and Shared. Piñatas are functionally the same, but with a different engagement mechanism.

Earlier this summer, Twitch started exploring a Boss Battle feature, and while the name has changed, Piñatas appear to be where they landed for this experiment.

My Thoughts:

A decade ago, some services had Boss Battle-style functionality - so conceptually, this isn't new. And functionally, this is just a Hype Train. Ultimately, it's kind of a cute way to rework the Hype Train concept, and it is optional: creators can opt out. My only real concern is whether it comes across as annoying. Hype Trains are passive because they aren't distracting (creators can ignore or engage with them if they want). This sounds a bit more engaging, which may mean distraction from the content. We'll see!

PS. If Twitch isn't also planning to monetize this, the company is doomed. Concept: Piñata is sponsored by Fortnite. Supply Llama Piñata where every hit drops 10% Bonus Bits, Bonus Subs, etc. Basically, it becomes an interactive ad that shares value with creators.
