Twitch Caps Viewbotters, Emmett Shear: Rando Twitch Guy, Social Post Icks, and Chilled Chaos Retiring

Good day, and welcome! A packed week for Twitch updates, including a big change coming: persistent viewbotters will see their viewership capped. Now, there's obviously a lot of concern and uncertainty about how this will be applied (particularly regarding weaponization), but until we see it in action, it's hard to predict how it will play out. The last time they announced a change to combat viewbotting, we immediately saw a large drop (~20%) in sitewide viewership, followed by a slight rebound. Looking back, it settled at around a 10% drop in sitewide viewership. Would any of you be interested in how I (privately) analyze accounts to determine whether they are tampering with their viewership? Let me know in the comments! But with that, let's get into what happened last week.

🟪 TWITCH
  • Twitch has announced new enforcement against persistent viewbotters that will cap a streamer's viewership. There are a LOT of questions about how this will work, the effectiveness, and the outcomes. We'll have to wait and see, but here are my early thoughts.
  • Twitch CEO Dan Clancy says embeds are not a primary source of viewbots on Twitch.
  • Twitch shut down the Monthly Recap feature due to low usage. A new graveyard addition.
  • According to new Twitch documentation, monetized streamers in Iceland must comply with new reporting regulations.
  • Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting is testing server-side transcoding to supplement streams doing 1440p and Vertical. This is due to streamers experiencing performance issues related to hardware or bandwidth. Strange choice...
  • The Bits Acceptable Use policy was updated for the first time since 2018. Key takeaway: Bits can only be used for on-stream impact (general support, content, overlays, extensions, etc.) The examples are clear, though. Click the first link above.
  • Twitch warned Partners that it would soon start enforcing against randomized video content, such as Omoggle. However, roughly three hours later, they decided to scrap the entire policy - and allow all randomized video services.
  • Pluto announced he is leaving Twitch. One only needs to read the comments to know that this is a major loss for the community.
  • Twitch Drops have received an update, making progress and availability accessible from a menu overlayed on chat.
  • Twitch is testing a way for streamers to send a short, personalized note to their viewers when they hit a stream achievement, such as a Watch Streak or Subscriber Anniversary. They are currently calling it Streamer Shouts.
  • Twitch's Technology Officer was on a podcast about how she runs safety on the platform.
  • New Badges: SpeeDons 6 (Watch Time), IRL (Watch Time), Crash (Watch Time)
